The carbon steel and stainless steel are the most frequently used material in pipe fittings. However, the two materials are various in many aspects. Carbon steel is an iron-carbon alloy with a carbon content of 0.0218% to 2.11%. It also generally contains small amounts of silicon, manganese, sulfur, and phosphorus. Generally speaking, the higher the carbon content of carbon steel is, the greater the hardness and the higher the strength are. However, Stainless Steel (Stainless Steel) is the abbreviation of stainless acid-resistant steel. The stainless steel is resistant to air, steam, water and other weak corrosive media or stainless steel. In this paper, the author would like to describe the differences between carbon steel and stainless steel.

The differences between carbon steel and stainless steel can be concluded as following:

1.Color

Stainless steel contains more chromium and nickel metal with the sliver exterior color. However, the carbon steel is mainly carbon and iron alloy. The main color of the exterior is iron color, which will be much darker.

2.Texture

Stainless steel contains many other metal elements with smooth surface. While the carbon steel contains more iron and carbon, but the surface is not smooth compared with stainless steel.

3.Magnetism

The surface of carbon steel is magnetic and can be adsorbed by magnets. But the stainless steel is not magnetic under normal conditions and will not be adsorbed by magnets.

4.Application

Stainless steel is preferred for many consumer products and can be used decoratively in construction. While carbon steel is often preferred in manufacturing, production and in projects where the steel is mostly hidden from view.

Apart from the differences in color, texture, magnetism and application, the stainless steel boasts various differences in many other aspects. For instance, there is an in built chromium oxide layer in stainless steel, which is not present in the carbon steel. Carbon steel can corrode whereas stainless steel is protected from corrosion. Besides,Stainless Steel has lower thermal conductivity than Carbon steel.

The above mentioned text is a brief introduction to the differences between carbon steel and stainless steel, which mainly include application, color, texture, magnetism and so on. If you want to know more about this, please contact with us as soon as possible.
