Among various valve products, gate valve and butterfly valve are two frequently used models. However, many users maybe confused about gate valve and butterfly valve, they find it difficult in choosing these two models. In this paper, the author would like to describe the difference between the gate valve and the butterfly valve.
Gate valve is the most common start and open valve, it uses the flash board to connect or cut pipeline medium. It can not be used for the closure purpose, and shouldn’t avoid flash board trace open during operation, because high speed flowing medium washout will speed up the damage to sealing face. Flash board is vertical to gate seat, with lifting motion, it just like a gate to cut pipeline medium, that’s the reason why it is called the gate valve.
From the pressure handling side the gate valves withstand bigger pressures than the butterfly. So they differ form the pipeline they are used according the average pressure at the line Also the construction of each is different and is related with the max. Pressure to withstand
It is often used to either fully open up the pipe structure to enable free flow or completely cut off the flow when fully closed. It can function well across different temperatures and pressures; however, is susceptible to seepage under very high pressures, unless lined with special seat inserts to ensure a snug seal.
Gate valves are extensively used in large-scale systems that require uninterrupted bi-directional flow of liquids and gases, or uni-directional discharges at specific time intervals.
Manually operated using round handles.Operations can be automated using electric actuators or pneumatic handles.
Butterfly valve’s closure member(valve clack or butterfly board) is round disk, it rotates around axes to open or close the valve. Full open and full closure of the butterfly valve always below than 90°, butterfly valve itself and butterfly pole has self-locking function, to locate butterfly board, usually install a worm reducer on valve rod. Worm reduce can not only give butterfly board the self-locking function, but also improve the operating performance of valve.
Butterfly valves find use only in low pressure and low temperature flow systems. Lightweight and short face-to-face dimension, they can be used both for isolation and regulating the flow of material using their characteristic quarter turn rotating action.

Valves can be operated using manual levers or energized hydraulic or pneumatic actuators.
For other differences, butterfly valve is cheaper than gate valve; butterfly valve can be used to regulate flow, but gate valve can’t; gate valve pressure is higher than butterfly valve; gate valve owns better sealing property than butterfly valve.
